Period 2 Morning college prep students had a 40-minute class period today due to the afternoon Advisory session. We began with warmups, then did whiteboard sentences and went through the slideshow (sans pictures, since the projector is currently on the blitz). Afterward we worked on our new poem (the Prologue to Romeo and Juliet) and had just enough time for a pop quiz on the end of Chapter 1 of Animal Farm, the reading of which was homework over the weekend. Homework: Study the new poem and get to work on journaling! Period 3 Morning honors students had a 40-minute class period today due to the afternoon Advisory session. We began with warmups, then segued into new vocabulary words (Unit 9-2) and the new poem (the Prologue to Romeo and Juliet). The remainder of class time was spent on Animal Farm, Chapter 2. Homework: Besides journaling and studying the new poem, finish reading Chapter 2 and make a colorful Seven Commandments. Period 7 Afternoon honors students had an entire regular-length period with me today. We began with warmups, then segued into new vocabulary words (Unit 9-2) and the new poem (the Prologue to Romeo and Juliet). The remainder of class time was spent on Animal Farm, Chapters 3 and 4. We learned where the milk and apples are going, and we read up to the Battle of the Cowshed. Homework: Besides journaling and studying the new poem, you should finish reading Chapter 4, do the Chapter 3 and 4 questions (with pages numbers and quotes), and write up your own Squealer-type argument (AND ILLUSTRATE IT). Period 2 Morning college prep students began with warmups (which were due today) and whiteboard sentences. We reviewed the new vocabulary through the vocab slideshow, then worked on understanding and memorizing Shakespeare's Prologue to Romeo and Juliet. Each student recited two lines of the poem for a grade today. The remainder of class was spent on Chapter 1 of Animal Farm. Homework: Finish the last three pages of Chapter 1 and complete the Official Portraits worksheet. Period 6 Afternoon college prep students began with warmups (which were due today) and whiteboard sentences. We reviewed the new vocabulary through the vocab slideshow, then worked on memorizing Shakespeare's Prologue to Romeo and Juliet. The remainder of class was spent reading Chapter 2 of Animal Farm. Homework: Finish the last few pages of Chapter 2 and study the Prologue; we will have a memorization worksheet AND two lines due on Tuesday. Periods 3 and 7 Honors students began class by completing and turning in the warmups. We then went through the vocabulary slideshow twice to review for the quiz, which followed immediately afterward. I checked journals while students took the quiz. Once everyone was done, Period 3 students began Chapter 1 in Animal Farm while Period 7 students endured a homework check and began reading Chapter 3. Homework: Period 3 students should finish Chapter 1, complete the Official Portraits worksheet, and study "Sonnet 29." Period 7 students should finish Chapter 3 and study "Sonnet 29." Period 2 Morning college prep students began with warmups, then made flash cards for the new vocabulary unit, the second half of Sadlier-Oxford's Unit 4. We went through the slideshow and reviewed our new poem (the Prologue to Romeo and Juliet). There was no time for further work, though, due to the shortened schedule. Homework: none Period 6 Afternoon college prep students began with whiteboard sentences and slideshow, then spent some time translating the Prologue of Romeo and Juliet into more current English. Every student recited the first two lines aloud; they'll be a grade tomorrow! Homework: Make sure your journal is ready (two pages front and back written) and that you know the first two lines of the poem for tomorrow. Period 3 Morning Honors students began with warmups and a heads-up about journaling. I checked flash cards and discussed the poem ("Sonnet 29" will be worth DOUBLE on Monday, so students need to study!!). Afterward, we drew our "animal fates" and made tags to wear for the duration of Animal Farm. Homework: Besides Quia and printing the X2 report, make sure your journal is ready for the first sticker of Term 3 tomorrow! Period 7 Afternoon Honors students began with warmups and a flash card check. We then finished reading/enacting Chapter 2 of Animal Farm. Homework: Besides Quia and printing the X2 report, you are responsible for answering the Chapter 1-2 questions (giving page numbers and quotes) and filling out a (colorful and accurate) Seven Commandments worksheet. Period 2 Morning college prep students took the benchmark exam today. Homework: none Period 6 Afternoon college prep students did the warmups, then made new flash cards for Unit 4-2; Ms. Muello came in and observed us during this portion of the class and the slideshow, too. After vocab was out of the way, we started working on our new poem (the Prologue from Romeo and Juliet), and then on the journal for this week (commentary on something of interest from Upfront magazine). Homework: Make sure you're journaling; two pages -- front and back -- will be due on Friday! Period 7 Afternoon honors students began with warmups and journaling, then made tags to show what animal they are in Animal Farm. Once artwork was out of the way, we began by reviewing Chapter 1 of the novel, rearranging our seating to put student "animals" where they were in the book. After everyone was properly situated, we began reading Chapter 2. Homework: Make sure you're practicing the poem; it will be worth DOUBLE on Monday. Bring your flash cards again tomorrow; I will check them then. Work on journaling as usual, and please bring food for tomorrow (we will finish Chapter 2 Thursday!). Period 3 did not meet today. Periods 3, 6, and 7 Both Honors and College Prep students took the Term 2 benchmark exam today. This is a skills-based test (sort of like a mini-MCAS) that tests how well students can read an article and answer questions about it, retain vocabulary and ascertain new words' meanings from context, and utilize grammar skills. Homework: Honors students have a poem due today and flash cards due on Wednesday (for Period 7) and Thursday (for Period 3). Period 2 did not meet today. Thursday, January 12 (Day 1) 01/12/2012
Period 2 Morning college prep students began with announcements and warmups; the warmups were turned in today. We then went through the vocabulary slideshow twice to review for the vocabulary quiz, which we took today. While students were finishing up their quizzes, I checked journals (this was a test grade today!). We finished class with everyone reciting "The Road Not Taken," by Robert Frost, for a test grade. Homework: none... but there will be a benchmark exam Wednesday. Period 6 Afternoon college prep students began with warmups, which were turned in today. Students then recited Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken" as a test grade. We then headed to the computer lab to do the Quia online vocabulary homework. I checked students' journals as well (this was a test grade today!). Homework: none... but there will be a benchmark exam Tuesday. Period 3 Morning honors students began with warmups, which were turned in today. We next reviewed Unit 8-2 vocabulary for today's quiz. Period 7 Afternoon honors students began with warmups, which they turned in today, and a series of checks: for flash cards, Animal Farm notes, and the allegory/fable worksheet. Afterwards I went through the slideshow to review Unit 8-2 for today's vocabulary quiz. While students were working on that, I checked journals (which counted as a test grade today). Homework: Besides studying "Sonnet 29," please be aware that there will be a benchmark exam on Tuesday. Period 4 Mythology students began the class with 15 minutes of cram time for the semester exam. Periods 2 and 6 College Prep students spent the 20-minute class period playing poemball to review "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. Homework: Study the poem; it's due tomorrow and counts as a test grade! Also, please make sure your journal is ready to go (it's also a test grade tomorrow) and that your warmups (with X2 report) are set. Period 3 We were on a tight budget timewise today with the 20-minute period! Honors students began with a series of checks: for flash cards, grammar, Animal Farm notes, and the fable/allegory worksheet. Once that was done, we had just enough time to work on the animal terms worksheet. Homework: Finish the worksheet, then make sure your journal is ready. Study vocab, too, because there will be a quiz tomorrow. Warmups will also be due -- so print your X2 report! Period 4 Mythology was the only class that met for a full hour. We began the hour by working on a VoiceThread review over Hindu mythology, then came back to Room 113 to celebrate the end of a successful term with a pizza party. Period 2 College Prep students did the warmups as usual, then checked over last night's grammar homework. We then drilled the poem and headed to the computer lab to do the Unit 4-1 online homework (Quia). Homework: Practice the poem! It's a test grade this Thursday!! Period 3 Morning honors students began with warmups and grammar, then went over the new vocabulary words. We then went through all of the background notes on Animal Farm. Homework: Finish the grammar worksheet and make flash cards for Unit 8-2. As always, you should be journaling and memorizing the poem. Finally, you need to do the Fable/Allegory worksheet and rewrite the background notes to Animal Farm. Period 7 Afternoon honors students began with warmups and grammar, then went over the new vocabulary words. I then added to their background notes on Animal Farm and began Chapter 1 with them. Homework: Finish reading chapter 1 on your own and do the worksheet. Also, you need to make flash cards for Unit 8-2 vocabulary as well as complete your grammar worksheet. Finally, finish the colorful rewrite of the Animal Farm background notes. Period 4 Mythology students completed a review sheet for the upcoming final exam (this Thursday). Periods 3 and 7 Honors students began with warmups and journaling, then did grammar. In lieu of reciting the first half of "Sonnet 29" after school, we played a game to help students master the first seven lines. Homework: Finish the grammar worksheet. Periods 2 and 6 College prep students began with warmups and a vocab worksheet (since minibooks are being graded at present). We went through the slideshow, did another practice worksheet on parallelism, and drilled "The Road Not Taken." The remainder of class was spent finishing up the background notes on Animal Farm. Period 2 Morning college prep students began with announcements and warmups, followed by whiteboard sentences and slideshow. We worked on the poem for a while as well as grammar, and I checked journals. I then distributed copies of Animal Farm, and we finished the background notes on the Russian Revolution. Homework: Rewrite the notes and make them colorful! Also, work on the poem; it'll be due at the end of Term 2 (next Thursday). Period 6 Afternoon college prep students began by turning in their warmups, writing whiteboard sentences, and going through the vocab slideshow. We worked on the poem and on grammar (a test over parallelism is coming VERY soon), and I checked journals. We then finished reading Chapter 1 in Animal Farm. Homework: Draw and color the main characters on the Chapter 1 homework sheet. Work on your poem, too; it'll be due at the end of Term 2 (next Thursday). Period 3 It's an understatement to relate that the morning honors students were busy today. They began class with turning in warmups, going through the slideshow, and taking the Unit 8-1 vocabulary quiz. This was followed up with an exam over Anthem (during which I checked journals). The last few minutes of the period were stuffed with turning in the vocabulary and vintage photograph stories and taking out a copy of Animal Farm. Homework: Work on the poem this weekend! Period 7 Afternoon honors students began class by turning in their warmups. We then went through the vocab slideshow twice to review for the quiz, which we took immediately afterward. While we waited for everyone to finish the quiz, we did grammar and I checked journals. I began the background notes on Animal Farm, but we'll finish those up on Monday. Homework: Besides studying the poem, finish your grammar, fill in the animal terms/sounds worksheet, and try to find morals for the three fables on the Fable/Allegory worksheet.
